You mention that you hear the fuel pump whirring when you switch the ignition on. That is basically a good sign, but it should stop after a few seconds when the required pressure is reached and the engine is not started.
A shot in the dark, but maybe your fuel pump is on its way out.
Whirring is o.k., but I have already tested fuel pumps on my 750 which were whirring but I could stop the pump easily with my thump, so with counterpressure it stopped immy.
Make first a simple test: remove the fuel line in engine room, start the car for a short time and see if gas/fuel comes out. You can even check the volume like shown here under testing the fuel pressure regulator
http://bmwe32.masscom.net/sean750/fuel_pressure_regulators/FuelPressureRegulators.htm
Of course could be many other things, but I would start to check if really fuel is delivered in the right volume and the right pressure.

Let us know the result.
In case you have a fuel pressure tester, it is of course more easy and accurate to test. For example Haborfreight have cheap ones.
You can also make one DIY with a pressure gauge, some fuel hose and a Y-piece.
